SPoT

So every year for around a decade in the summer a group of folks go on a South Pole Traverse(SPoT) from here to The South Pole and sometimes they're able to do 2 traverses in a season.  Pole is about 850 miles from here but it takes a little over a thousand miles of driving to get there, and it takes around a month, give or take.  They're mostly transporting fuel, around 100,000 gallons a year.  Pole is dependent on fuel, just like every Antarctic station is, and they're 850 miles from an ocean port.  Since McMurdo is the closest gas station they can either fly it in 55 gallon drums, which is insanely expensive, or put it in huge fuel bladders that they drag all the way there.  I found this little video of SPoT in action.  Enjoy.
